Background: Breastfeeding is a critical issue for public health.Only 39% of infants are exclusively fed exclusively with breast milk, despite the efforts of international scientific communities to sensitize them. This study attempted to review the literature on breastfeeding practices and beliefs. The research question was whether breastfeeding acceptance in society is affected by cultural and social standards.Method: All Pubmed articles between 1988 and 2008 were examined. These articles correlated the duration and initiation of breastfeeding with the cultural status in a particular society.Key words were society, breastfeeding and duration. Results: While breastfeeding can be determined by biological factors, it is often determined by the social norms and behavior of each society. The acceptance of breastfeeding by mothers is often determined by their views on the function of the breasts and the quality of the mother's milk. Conclusion: To promote breastfeeding, public health policies must consider and analyze the cultural status of the society.
